- Summary
- For four and a half years the Danes have been fighting their war of resistance against German occupation, using their most effective weapon - sabotage. Factories working for the enemy are burnt to the ground, Danish ships are scuttled in the harbour. As a reprisal many Danes were killed or arrested and sent to concentration camps. German troops swarmed the streets and tanks and motorcycles run on pavements to chase off citizens in Copenhagen. The King of Denmark is helped captive in the Sorgenfri Castle. But still the underground movement operates. House and department stores belonging to Danish Quislings are burnt down - and a General Strike is declared, and the German C-in-C declares the capital under a state of siege. But finally the Germans had to give in, and the strike was called off, after the German High Command had agreed to the Danish claims. A two minutes’ silence commemorated fallen comrades. An unarmed population had won a victory over the Nazis.
