Summary
The final 15 hours non-stop shelling by the Germans in Calais across to Dover. Civilians run to the cave shelters as the shelling starts. The railway station is in ruins and streets consist of shelled houses and craters. The number of dead and wounded mount daily and even patients are evacuated from Dover Hospital to safer places. RAF Lancasters and Halifaxes over Calais pound the gun emplacements (this raid took place a few days before the garrison capitulated). Canadian troops on their entry into Calais having first declared a mercy truce enabling the civilians of Calais to leave the town before the final onslaught begins). One of the German gun crew to be captured is the tallest man in the German army 7’ 3" Jacob Nacken.
