- Summary
- An eye-witness report broadcast by BBC War Correspondent Chester Wilmott, as the allies cross into Belgium and into Brussels. The Belgian people produce masses of flags, streamers, etc. on the day for which they’ve waited so long. Partisans now able to fight in the open grab their arms in search of any remaining Germans. Some of the first men to enter Brussels were of the 1st Belgian Group of the allied armies and they receive tumultuous welcome from the crowds. A fire in the Palace of Justice started by the Germans to burn important papers is fought by a human chain who rescue many documents and books. The Burgomaster of Brussels receives troops at the Hotel de Ville, he was until recently held as a prisoner of the Germans. Crowds seize and tear up and burn any remnants of the Nazi occupation they can lay their hands on as German POWs are marched through the streets.
