- In December, ships of the Royal Navy went into action against the German battleship "Scharnhorst". Captured German film shows the dash made by the "Scharnhorst" and the "Gneisenau" from Brest to their Norwegian base. With convoy of ships they come under attack from Swordfish of the Fleet Air Arm. The German guns go into action. One of the British convoy ships is hit and survivors are seen in lifeboats. At night naval barrage is put up, the result of which sunk the "Scharnhorst". It fell to the battleship "Duke of York" to close in for the final attack with torpedoes. Quoted figures announced 36 men rescued out of a complement of over 1,400.
