History
British Calendar was produced by the Central Office of Information (COI) for the Commonwealth Relations Office and the Foreign Office, primarily for distribution in the United States of America and the English-speaking countries of the Commonwealth such as Australia. Initially this 13-minute ‘cine-magazine for television’ was flown to New York on a monthly basis but by July 1961 it was fortnightly and from mid 1964, every week. Occasionally the version for the United States would differ from the Commonwealth one in terms of the stories used. The suffix A identifies these issues. From October 1964, the series changed its name to Calendar but the format remained the same.
Provenance
The data for this series has been compiled from existing production files [INF 6] and COI monthly divisional reports [INF 8] held at The National Archives, COI index cards at the BFI National Archive. There is no record of the release date, in terms of day and month, for issues of British Calendar. Where there is a month and year mentioned, this comes from the completion date mentioned in either the production documents, the date which the show copy was approved or the COI monthly division reports for the period. The year release date has been calculated from these.
