1938 - 1952
Category
Cinemagazine - Industrial
History
Shell Cinemagazine was one of the first sponsored industrial cinemagazines, focusing each ten-minute issue on the activities of the company and the benefits of oil to the community. It was produced by the Shell Film Unit, which had been established by Jack Beddington in 1936 and run by Arthur Elton (Realist Film Producers and later Film Centre), on a consultancy basis. The series maintained high production values and was well received critically, acclaimed as ‘technically unsurpassed in any field.' The magazine was intended for non-theatrical distribution both at home and abroad, acting both as a public relations exercise and also a counter-balance to the large volume of technical films produced by Shell. In 1940 foreign language versions were produced in French, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch. Twenty issues were made over fourteen years
