Career
In 1944 David Jacobs entered the Royal Navy Strand School, and also made his first broadcast on ‘Navy Mixture.' In the same year Jacobs became an announcer on the Forces Broadcasting service, and in 1945 he became Chief Announcer for Radio SEAC, Ceylon. In 1947 Jacobs became Assistant Station Director of Radio SEAC, and was subsequently recruited as a News Reader on the BBC General Overseas Service. Jacobs then became freelance, and in 1955 he began working for Associated-Rediffusion as a ‘compére, announcer and master of ceremonies, etc.' In that year Jacobs also began doing newsreel commentaries for Movietone. Leslie Mitchell [qv] had been recruited as Head of Talks Features for Associated-Rediffusion, and in July 1955 Jacobs was recruited to provide occasional relief for Geoffrey Sumner [qv], Movietone’s second commentator. Jacobs began commentating for Movietone with No.1364A, and, with Mitchell and Jeffrey Shearley [qv], provided regular relief for Sumner until his last credit as commentator for No.1427A in October 1956. Jacobs later had a successful career as a radio and television presenter.
