Mary Beales was an employee of DATA [qv], and as such, worked on several issues of Mining Review as a cutter. Her first credit is for ‘COAL ON ICE’ in Mining Review 1st Year No.7 of March 1948. She is credited for five other issues, however the last sees her directing the piece, ‘CENTRAL WORKSHOPS’ in Mining Review 2nd Year No.3 of November 1948.
Beales had directed before, her most famous work being ‘FAIR RENT’ (1946) a documentary filmed with the co-operation of the Aberdeen Rent Tribunal ‘concerning the way in which rents could be more fairly applied’.
