Career

Cyril Arapoff who was nearly eighty when he died in 1976, was established as a photographer in Oxford and made a reputation as a theatrical photographer in the thirties.

He moved into cinematography with the Crown Film Unit [qv], working upon many of their historically famous films made during the war. Later he worked with Rotha, notably on ‘A City Speaks’; then in the 50s went to Brazil to assist Cavalcanti in his effort to stimulate a new force in film-making. The Times recorded that ‘his work during that period reflected his feeling for atmosphere and for people’.
Later he joined the National Coal Board Film Unit [qv] as senior cameraman. During this time he is credited for three stories in Mining Review; ‘THE MAGNET’ in 4th Year No.7 of March 1951, ‘HIGH TENSION’ in 5th Year No.5 of January 1952, and ‘FIRE DOWN BELOW’ in 5th Year No.6 of February 1952.

As a freelancer he contributed some work to Pathe News in 1957; ‘A NEW STATE IS BORN’ in Issue No.57/20 and ‘GHANA GOES GAY’ in No.57/21, both of March 1957.
