Career

Jim Godfrey was credited as cameraman for a wide range of Movietone stories, beginning with ‘TRAVEL TURMOIL’ in British Movietone News No.1704A from February 1962, and ending with ‘ANOTHER ICE AGE?' in No.1755A of January 1963. According to Terry Gallacher [qv] of Movietone, Godfrey had been recommended by the Samuelsons, and ‘hired by Movietonews for the main purpose of working for UPMT (United Press Movietone Television).' He was this in a similar position to Tony Chapman [qv] and Peter West [qv]. In October 1963 United Press ended its agreement with Movietone and formed UPIN. However, it retained close links with Movietone, and Gallacher recalled that ‘cameramen Tony Chapman, Peter West and Jim Godfrey were paid by Movietone and worked for UPI who, under their new regime became known as United Press International Newsfilm (UPIN).' Godfrey would have filmed in 16mm for UPIN, and 35mm if working on stories for Movietone. UPIN in turn hired Godfrey’s services to the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), and eventually he joined ABC full time.
