This website is primarily aimed at Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils and contains a number of resources for students and teachers, including a Geotopics section, featuring case studies on popular subjects, as well as a number of videos, showing different geographical features and phenomena, including limestone features at Malham in Yorkshire and examples of coastal erosion at Holderness on the coast of East Yorkshire. There is also a stills gallery and a list of useful resources and links for teachers.

This website is the result of an AHRC-funded project to explore the relationship of film history, memory and the urban landscape of Liverpool from 1897 to the 1980s. Liverpool is one of Britain’s most filmed cities and one of the project’s achievements has been the creation of an online catalogue listing around 1700 films, particularly those which record the city’s urban landscape, documenting locations, landmarks and buildings. Consequently the emphasis is on amateur, newsreel, travelogues and promotional films, rather than fiction or feature films. In addition to the usual searches by genre, date etc. users can also search the catalogue by spatial and geographic information specific to each title.
There are also a number of videos, filmed at various events held throughout the project’s duration. Here writer Iain Sinclair talks about his view of Liverpool as an outsider. In this video Ethel Singleton speaks about her role in the Nick Broomfield documentary Behind the Rent Strike (1974), about the action undertaken by tenants in Kirkby New Town in December 1972 in protest at the Housing Finance Bill.

This organisation, based at the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) in Seattle, undertakes research to devise faster, more accurate ways of forecasting tsunamis, predict the effect of their impact on coastal communities and develop detection technology. Their website features a number of model animations of actual and simulated tsunami events. There is also a link to a YouTube and teaching videos and other educational resources.

These animations supplement the PBS Savage Earth television series, which was first broadcast in 1998 and tells the story of natural disasters. A series of flash animations, which are accompanied by explanatory text, show, in a step by step way, the action behind earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis, while articles on the website explain the science of the phenomena. There are also links to other web resources, from general geophysics sites to resources specific to tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanoes.

This interactive site allows you to scroll in and out to see the relative size of objects from the smallest - quantum foam and string - to the largest - the universe - and plenty of examples in between. Each of the items are clickable to show interesting facts or give more information about the item. For example, it tells us that ‘Rhode Island at 75 kilometres is the smallest state in the USA. However, it could still fit the world’s population on it.' The site was created for fun by a fourteen year old boy from California, with help from his twin brother. The site is also available in several world languages including even Esperanto.

Based in the West Midlands, this charity aims to enable rural and disadvantaged communities to participate in creative media activities and, in their own words, ‘create high quality film, photography, web, and print resources, that reflect diverse rural communities and issues, and challenge stereotypes and prejudice.' The website provides access to many of their films (click here) as well as detailed information on their diverse activites aimed at engaging with young people and local communities. They also run media skills courses specifically aimed at the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities as part of a Big Lottery-funded scheme.

Alistair Cooke’s first Letter from America - initially called American Letter - was broadcast by the BBC in March, 1946. It was to be the first of 2,869 such broadcasts, spanning 58 years, making it by far the longest-running talk programme of any radio station in the world. The 920 surviving recordings, broadcast between 1946 and 2004, are now online. The can be searched by date and by theme, the latter including such categories as US presidents, race, music & movies, history and so on.

This website brings together news of the latest science research from universities in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and the USA. There are four main categories: Earth and the Environment; Health & Medicine; Science & Technology and Society & Culture. Most of the news consists of articles illustrated with still photographs but some moving imagery is used, as in this article which looks at how quickly can glaciers grow (and melt)?, using a study of the prehistoric activity of Baffin Island’s glaciers with a view to developing accurate models to predict how climate change in the future will affect glaciers and ice sheets.

This resource provides over 200 film clips about Scotland with the aim of documenting a century of social, economic and environmental changes in Scottish lives. Primarily aimed at Scottish schools, the clips are available to download for Glow and Shibboleth users but the streamed films can be viewed by anybody. Each clip has a synopsis, production details and comes with a list of questions and suggested activities for students and teachers. The result of a partnership project between Education Scotland, the National Library of Scotland and Creative Scotland, the collection is carefully chosen and covers a variety of themes, including Scottish industry, architecture, fashion, tourism, music, rural communities, the growth of towns and cities, football, immigration, health and Scotland’s experience of World War II. The footage encompasses home movies, adverts, animation, public information films, party political broadcasts, industrial films and fiction films.

Website established in July 2009 providing links to over 2100 streaming documentaries, covering a wide range of subject areas and arranged according to genre. The subjects covered include Archaeology, Atheism, Art and Artists, Biology, Business, Environment, History, Philosophy, Religion, Science, and Space to name just a few.
