Fathom was made up of 14 institutions, including LSE, the British Library, Cambridge University, Chicago University, and offered interviews, articles, performances, exhibits and free online seminars. The bias was mainly towards science, but journalism, history, politics and other areas were also covered. Inactive since August 2012 the site shows the following message: "This site is not longer being developed or maintained, but was part of a series of early and experimental online learning projects. Material here continues at present to be available to members of the Columbia community, but there may be some segments of the site that no longer work as initially intended."

Previously known as Omni, this is an essential gateway to academic and related web-sites on all aspects of medicine including bio-medical research. NB Intute closed in July 2011 and the site has now been archived. No further resources are being added and no changes are being made to existing content, so the resource will increasingly become less useful and reliable.

Compiled by a dermatologist who is also a film buff, this site offers a wholly new way of looking at the history of cinema, through its concentration on skin complaints. Learn about Jennifer Lopez’s chicken pox scars, Marilyn Monroe’s mole, Patrick Stewart’s hair loss, James Cagney’s acne scars and how skin disease is used as a cinematic shorthand for evil, and the few films (The Elephant Man, Mask, Man Without a Face) where skin disease is depicted realistically and sympathetically.
