This is the catalogue for the Essex Record Office, which holds not only documents, maps and photographs but also sound recordings and videos. The collections cover oral history; selected items from BBC Essex radio; selections from local hospital TV and talking newspapers; videos of local interest, including many from the East Anglian Film Archive; dialect recordings; and recordings of music performed by local musicians, including a major collection of folk music and folk dance drawn from Essex sources. The site also offers well-produced user guidelines to four registers: family, house, vehicles and electoral rolls. Official registers are excellent avenues into researching many aspects of local history and culture but their records can sometimes be difficult to understand, so the tips on how to search and how to make sense of the results are very useful. The advanced search tool can be used to narrow results to one type of material only (e.g. audiovisual). To watch the moving image and sound holdings an account needs to be created, and registration is free.

A repository of artists’ online works that draw their inspiration from Kurt Schwitters. Guided by his innovations in visual arts, spoken word, typography and poetry, the project anticipates how Schwitters’ spirit might have flourished in the online world, while highlighting the debt that new forms of digital collage owe to Schwitters’ formative example. Funded by Film and Video Umbrella, the site includes newly commissioned works by Andrea Luka Zimmerman, Nick Crowe and Ian Rawlinson, Ian Forsyth and Jane Pollard, Alec Finlay, and George Barber. Their works reflect the many different facets of Schwitters’ aesthetic while exploring today’s ever expanding outlets for combining and communicating images, texts and sounds. Whether using content-sharing platforms such as Pinterest as places to find and assemble material, or experimenting with other forms of digital dissemination such as downloads and applications, the pieces demonstrate how Schwitters’ practice continues to reverberate in the present.

The archive offers a complete database and on-line video streaming of all 450 films made by the film department of Arts Council England between 1953 and 1998 and several films produced before 2003 by the dance Department of ACE. The films are available in digital form as the result of a three-year project by the University of Westminster and access is free of charge to UK further and higher education institutions. The collection provides a unique record of British and international post-war art, as well as of documentary film-making in the UK. Many titles in the collection contain rare material about individual artists, while others offer definitive coverage of their subject. Artists featured include Bacon, Spencer, Hockney, Moore and the Young British Artist (YBA) group. Some of the best filmmakers in the UK, including Anthony Minghella and Isaac Julien, were commissioned to make films for the collection. As well as focusing on individual artists, architects, writers and poets, the films document particular art movements that have continued to influence contemporary British Art, such as Surrealism, Dadaism, Futurism and Kinetic art.
