A searchable, annotated subject directory of nearly 8,000 resources selected and evaluated by librarians. Informative without being too wordy, attractively laid out and easy to use, it divides each topic into ‘Best of...', ‘Directories’, ‘Databases’ and ‘Specific Resources’. Radio and television are categorised under ‘Media’, but films are hidden under ‘Recreation’.
This site is no longer active, but the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine offers a capture of the website as it appeared on 30/08/2007.This does not include access to the moving images.

Women Make Movies is a multicultural, multiracial, non-profit media arts organization which facilitates the production, promotion, distribution and exhibition of independent films and videotapes by and about women, and is the largest distributor of women’s media in North America. The site includes its film and video catalogue of almost 500 titles, with synopses, critical comments, filmmaker biographies, and a few (elusive) press kits, study guides and video clip previews. There is a good links section on various aspects of women and film.

The Human Genome Project (HGP) was an international research effort to sequence and map all of the genes - together known as the genome - of members of our species, Homo sapiens. It was completed in April 2003. This site offers access to a wealth of information on the history of the HGP, its progress, cast of characters and future, including An Interactive Timeline of the Human Genome. The original site of the project, Human Genome Project Information Archive (1990-2003) , can be accessed for historical purposes.

Billing itself as ‘the Hub of Animation on the Internet’, this multi-categorised site includes everything of interest in the world of animation, from current releases, to web links, news stories, articles, profiles of animators, videos and artwork for sale, the journal Visual Magic Magazine, business information and vacancies. Although no material is streamed as such, there are brief animated GIF clips throughout, particularly in the section ‘Animation Heaven and Hell’ which includes the work of Starewicz and Svankmajer.

The British Film Institute is the UK’s national information and resource centre for the moving image. Its activities cover the BFI National Library, the BFI National Archive, the National Film Theatre, education and publication. The site includes access to its huge database of film and television information, and an online catalogue for the BFI National Library of over 42,000 books on film and television. Also information on screenings at the National Film Theatre, educational resources, film and media industries information. The site is making available an increasing amount of online video content, including special projects such as the Mitchell and Kenyon collection of early actualities, but much video content is being made available through Screenonline .

Presto Centre (previously PrestoSpace) serves the audiovisual communities interested in digitisation and digital preservation worldwide. Its main objective is to provide advice on technical requirements, format decisions, legal decisions or online publishing requirements through free resources, use cases and publications. 57 Productions organises public events and distributes recorded material on popular poetic material in the UK, representing over fifty writers and performers. The catalogue offers for sale audio and video recordings by, amongst others, Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze, John Cooper Clarke, Linto Kwezi Johnson, Liz Lochhead, Adrian Mitchell and Benjamin Zephaniah.The Jukebox section of the site plays audio recordings of poets reading their own work. In October 2006 a new website will be launched - carrying new audio-visual, audio & interactive content including the worlds first Poetry Video Jukebox which will feature newly produced & special arkive poetry-films and iPoems will present new recordings alongside 57s back-catalogue, starting with 1001 MP3s. Access to the new site will be through subscription-based membership areas and by directly downloadable MPEG & MP3 files. Annual subscriptions will be £10 - to access all areas. Downloads of audio-visual & audio content will also be available at £1 for 1 x MPEG & 50p for 1 x MP3 files (all figures inc. VAT)
