This selection of documentaries from the long-running BBC archaeology series features a representative choice of programmes, from Roman Goose March in 1966, to the 1989 programme about Sutton Hoo. The series consisted of a mixture of filmed documentaries and live broadcasts. In the latter category a notable example was Silbury Dig - The Heart of the Mound in which Magnus Magnusson meets the archaeologists who have uncovered a tunnel leading to the heart of the neolithic earthwork.

In 2009 the contents of 597 Hungarian newsreels, spanning the years 1931 to 1945, were made available online in their entirety to the public by the Hungarian National Audiovisual Archive (NAVA). In addition to this a smaller collection of 26 pieces consisting of silent newsreels from between 1914 and 1924 was added to the site in 2010. The quality of the digitised film is extremely high, even for the earlier material, as in this clip from November 1919 showing Admiral Horthy entering Budapest. The collection has an introduction in English, as well as a News in English section, but the rest of the resource is in Hungarian. Nonetheless, given the quality of the digitised images, together with a stylish design, a clear layout, and dropdown menus which give a list of search terms, covering personalities, locations and themes, the determined researcher will find his or her time spent browsing this resource well rewarded.

This website is the result of a collaboration between the Humanities Division and the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford. The project aims, through an interdisciplinary approach, to analyse and explore the fertile and complex period in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, when early modern science began to take shape, and it aims to do this by focusing on the networks of learned correspondence from the period. In this way the project hopes to provide a unified way of approaching a subject which would otherwise - given the variety of its disciplines, professions, institutions and settings - be extremely daunting. One outcome of the project is a union catalogue - Early Modern Letters Online. A number of podcasts and videos document the proceedings of workshops and conferences, software demonstrations, and introductions to tools and resources for the digital representation of correspondence.

This website brings together a wide variety of research material covering Irish-made and Irish-themed films and television programmes. It consists of the Irish Film & Television Index, Irish Film and Television Biographies and the Irish Film and Television Bibliography. Supplementing these resources are the digitised transcriptions of a number of Censor’s Record, which, as the site says provide "a unique insight into Irish social and cultural attitudes in the twentieth century". Finally, a selection of nine early Irish films, which have been fully restored and digitised to a high standard, can be viewed, or downloaded from the site. The films, which were made between 1910 and 1915, are accompanied by full filmographic information, transcripts, references, detailed scholarly notes and links to other resources.

UNESCO are making an increasing amount of film and audio material available via their Multimedia pages. A broad range of content is available, beginning in 1945, when the organisation was founded, as documented in this film showing Ellen Wilkinson, then British Minister of Education, reading from UNESCO’s newly adopted constitution. Searching can be done across nine categories: Education; Public Health; Research; Peace & Dialogue; Culture & Traditions; Historic Places; Access to Knowledge; Communities; and UNESCO History. A wide range of material is available, from conference proceedings, interviews and lectures to recordings of performing arts events, documentaries on sites of historic or natural interest and films about UNESCO’s projects and initiatives. The material is all freely available to view. Some films are represented by extracts but registered users can request to see the whole film via the Video on Demand service.

The Filmoteca Espanola’s new online platform streams various short films, documentaries and feature films from its archives. The newsreel NO-DO (Noticiarios y Documentales) which ran from 1943 - 1981 has recently been made available to view in its entirety on the site, providing a fascinating and invaluable record of life in Spain under General Franco, albeit one viewed through the prism of a series which was closely linked with the dictator’s regime. Many of the newsreels are pure propaganda, showing Franco opening public works, giving speeches and the like but much of the material also focuses on everyday Spanish life, covering sports, entertainment, fashion, scientific and technological advances as well as an "Instantaneas Mundiales" slot which provides a brief round-up of international news. Digitised programme sheets are linked to the videos and viewable in pdf format. Although some of the original audio commentaries have been lost, the standard of digitisation of the newsreels themselves is uniformly excellent, making this an essential resource for students of modern Spanish history and newsreel historians alike.

Filmmaker Adam Curtis uses this BBC-hosted site to express his own opinions in a series of blogs which are illustrated with footage and stills from the BBC archives. The results here echo his films in that they are highly associative, creating layers and levels of meaning from the use of fragments of archival footage and music, but less sprawling than his films, which means that often they can seem more to the point without losing the sense of playfulness and originality which characterises his work. The post Rupert Murdoch - A Portrait of Satan is the story of the media mogul’s rise to power in Britain as told via the BBC’s coverage, in which Curtis aims to illustrate "how far [Murdoch’s] populist rhetoric is genuine, and how far its is a smokescreen to disguise the interests of another elite". In another post - While the Band Played On - Curtis elegantly demonstrates how the use of music can manipulate our emotional reactions to watching film.

This collection of 120 short films was produced by the British Council in the 1940s to promote a picture of ‘Britain and Britishness’ abroad and to present the country in a positive light during World War II. Although essentially produced as cultural propaganda, the films are extremely varied in subject matter, covering leisure activities, industry, education, the arts, science and technology as well as urban and rural life. The film The People’s Land - filmed in Technicolor and accompanied by Ralph Vaughan Williams’ evocative score - tells the story of the founding of the National Trust and is typical in its idealised presentation of Britain as a country where the idea of freedom is seen as being as much a constituent part of its traditions as the physical elements of the landscape itself. The films are free to view and the website positively encourages users to download the films, use them creatively and share the results. A series of case studies, illustrated with digitised versions of original documents and paperwork and a number of contextual essays adds value to the site’s content. The films are presented with detailed credits, original synopses, and a series of interesting facts (somewhat misleadingly called ‘Trivia’) about each film, along with links to other parts of the collection and other websites.
