StartingUni.info podcasts are recordings of students talking about their experiences of starting university. It features a range of topics which new students will find useful, such as accommodation, money management, the first few days at university, assessments, etc. Although the recordings are mostly of students studying biological sciences at the University of Leicester, most of what they say will apply to any course at any university.
Self described as ‘Life explained on film’, this site is marketed as a video encyclopedia, covering a very broad range of subjects including Food, DIY, Beauty, Fitness, Life and Wedding. Based in the UK, USA and Spain with a number of items supplied by users, the content ranges from practical self-help guides to more general topics. Flash is required to view the content which can be downloaded onto ipods.
This website offers a place for students and teachers to begin working with oral history interviews as historical evidence. Written by Linda Shopes of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, this guide presents an overview of oral history and ways historians use it, tips on what questions to ask when reading or listening to oral history interviews, a sample interpretation of an interview, an annotated bibliography, and a guide to finding and using oral history online.
The Amber film and photography collective is based in Newcastle upon Tyne and has been active in the North East of England since 1969. Their website provides a complete Amber filmography, news on forthcoming projects, details on how to obtain copies of the films and information on its Side Gallery. The catalogue can be searched by title or keyword and some titles are streamed. DVDs of some title can be ordered online from the shop.
A site which brings together podcasts from the BBC available on i-Player. Programmes can be searched by genre (e.g. Drama, Religion & Ethics, News) or channel. Searches on educational level can also be made (e.g. Pre-school, Secondary, Adults).
In Autumn 2011 the Film Archive Forum relaunched as Film Archives UK. Film Archives UK represents the UK’s public sector film and television archives (the BFI’s National Film and Television Archive, the Imperial War Museum Film & Video Archive, the Scottish Screen Archive, the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales, and the various English regional film archives). These archives care for the moving image heritage of the nation, collecting, preserving and providing access to screen history from the birth of film to the present day. The site includes policy documents, guides to access (including online delivery), and advice on aspects of film archiving.
The South West Film and Television Archive (SWFTA) is the regional film archive for the South West of England. Established in 1993, it is one of the largest regional film archives in the UK and holds the Westward Television and TSW (Television South West) independent television collections as well as a significant number of donated film collections, both amateur and professional. The Archive is able to sell copies of some of its holdings on DVD. The SWFTA is a member of Film Archives UK.
