A project sponsored by Cambridge University and The Wellcome Trust that gives researchers the opportunity to work with filmmakers and artists to make short documentaries about their work. The resulting 13 films are accessible and engaging. Titles in the series include Rise of the Machines with two shorts: Pain in the Machine, which looks at the possibilities and challenges of creating a robot that feels pain,and Friend in the Machine, which considers relationships with robots, Morphogenesis, Dish life and DNA Origami: folding on the smallest scale.

This selection of sponsored films is presented by the National Film Preservation Foundation, in partnership with the Library of Congress and the Internet Archive. There are 102 films in total: the selection was made from The Field Guide to Sponsored Films by Rick Prelinger. This annotated filmography singles out 452 sponsored films of particular historical, cultural, and artistic interest from the more than 300,000 thought to have been made in the USA. Most of the films are available to download and are accompanied by detailed synopses and contextual information.

This resource features interviews gathered by the British Antarctic Survey Archives Service. The audio clips are freely available and are accompanied by transcripts. The focus is on those involved with polar science, especially people who worked for, or closely with, Operation Tabarin, 1943–45, Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), 1945–61, and British Antarctic Survey (BAS), 1962–present. Interviewees include members of the scientific teams such as meteorologists, geologists and ionosphericists, as well members of the technical and support teams such as radio operators, pilots, medics, mechanics and cooks. Searching can be done by subject keyword, location and person name.

This site features some of the work being undertaken by a large interdisciplinary study of voice-hearing based at Durham University and supported by the Wellcome Trust. The team includes academic researchers from cognitive neuroscience, English Literature, cultural studies, medical humanities, philosophy, linguistics, psychology, psychiatry and theology. The area of research explores the subjective experience of hearing voices. The site features a series of podcasts and other audio material available in the resources section of the site.

Science video channel on Youtube featuring content presented by Greg Foot and Hannah Fry. The Brit Lab Original series consists of a series of short films featuring experiments and investigations into various phenomena, including decomposition, spontaneous combustion and cannibalism. Hannah Fry’s Number Hub videos see the mathematician explaining mathematical concepts and theories in an entertaining and engaging way. The channel also includes videos from James May’s Head Squeeze series and a small selection from the BBC ‘Tomorrow’s World’ series, including this demonstration of early touch screen technology.

Extremely useful website for medical students learning about human anatomy. Produced by former paediatric urological surgeon Robert Whitaker, the site features podcasts, audovisual demonstrations, revision exercises, tips and mnemonics. A subscription site provides even more material, including 144 video podcasts, 23 hours of audio and 38 lectures. It delivers more than 50,000 video titles spanning all academic subject areas including anthropology, business, counselling, film, health, history, music, and more. More than 12,000 titles are exclusive to Alexander Street. From Jan 1 2016, it includes the new “AVON-to-Own” feature, where subscribing libraries receive perpetual rights to videos they select at the end of each annual term commensurate with the amount of the subscription, using an entire year of usage data to support selections.
