Title
Techniques of Borehole Drilling
Synopsis
Demonstrates Shell and Augering, giving viewers a chance to see a U100 core sampler in action; a standard penetration test using a split spoon sampler; and the use of a bailer. Rotary Drilling is then demonstrated, starting with Open Hole Drilling where the method is explained showing a range of drill bits, followed by Rotary Coring where a double tube swivel core barrel is assembled and explained. Analysis of the core illustrates total core recovery, rock quality designation and lithographic detail. Finally, Continuous Flight Augering and Hollow Stem Augering are shown and compared with the previous techniques.

Title
Drilling to sample and monitor Groundwater
Synopsis
Observes the drilling of two 60m boreholes into mixed measures and sandstone beds, using Rotary Percussion Drilling. An analysis of 1m interval samples shows how the actual geology differed from the published geological maps. The holes are artesian, and the fitting of piezometer tubing and the subsequent capping of the holes is shown. The programme ends by showing field instrumentation being used to investigate aquifer properties and to measure the chemical properties of the groundwater.
