This Week: Volume 1
- Synopsis
- THIS WEEK was the first weekly current-affairs programme aired on commercial television in the UK. Beginning in 1956 as a light, magazine-style show punctuated by more serious items, by the mid-1960s it encompassed a range of groundbreaking single investigations; a highly successful format that continued into the early 1990s. Celebrated presenters and reporters included Jonathan Dimbleby, Ludovic Kennedy, Desmond Wilcox, Jeremy Thorpe and Daniel Farson.
Like its Granada counterpart WORLD IN ACTION, remained committed to bringing high-quality journalism to a wide viewing public. These half-hour documentaries, ranging in subject from major overseas conflicts to domestic issues like abortion, sexuality, racism, homelessness and the Troubles in Northern Ireland, were provocative and on occasion highly controversial, highlighting both the strengths and the risks of its brand of uncompromising television journalism. - Language
