Christina: A Medieval Life

Synopsis
Michael Woods traces the history of the Hertfordshire village of Codicote in the 14th century: a period which not only saw famine, plague - the Back Death - and war but also marked a sea change in English life: the beginning of the end of serfdom, the growth of individual freedom and the start of a capitalist market economy. Using medieval court books, Woods uses the story of the local inhabitants as a prism through which to see the bigger picture of the shaping of the character and destiny of the ordinary British people: a history told from the bottom up and especially through the eyes of the forgotten half of the workforce: the women.
