Andrew Marr’s Megacities

Synopsis
For the first time in history, more people live in cities than the countryside. Across the globe, there are 21 cities with more than 10 million people, and these numbers are set to increase. In this three-part series, Andrew Marr finds out how these heaving mega-metropolises feed, protect and move their citizens. He meets both the engineers and technocrats who control the cities and the ordinary people who must live with their decisions. Often, it’s the ordinary citizens who are the unsung heroes, finding ingenious ways to keep the megacity functioning.

In the first programme, LIVING IN THE CITY, Andrew Marr looks at how people live in London, Dhaka, Tokyo, Mexico City and Shanghai. Programme 2, CITIES ON THE EDGE, takes a look at safety and security in Tokyo, London and Mexico City. Whether earthquake, terrorism, flood or just crime, it is the geology, politics and social makeup of the megacities that make them some of the most profitable and dangerous places to live.Programme 3, SUSTAINING THE CITY, finds out how megacities stay fed and looks at their waste disposal and transport systems.
