Nobel Scientists: Interviews with Nobel Prize Winning Scientists

Synopsis
The 20th Century was a time that saw significant advances in all branches of science. In the 1980s, the BBC decided to preserve a record of some of the great minds behind these remarkable developments and recorded a series of in-depth interviews with Nobel Prize-winning scientists in conversation with biologist and broadcaster Lewis Wolpert.
Never before broadcast, this footage was discovered within the BBC Archive and made available in partnership with BBC World Service and the Wellcome Collection. It presents a unique record of key figures from the world of science in the recent past.

The collection includes: Professor Ernest Walton -working with John Cockcroft to split the atom (recorded c. 1985, 43 minutes); Dr Frederick Sanger - an interview with the scientist who helped unlock the genetic code (recorded c. 1985, 63 mins); Lord Alexander Todd - how playing with iron filings led to a Nobel Prize in Chemistry (recorded c. 1985, 38 minutes); Niels Jerne - discovering how our immune systems protect us.(recorded c. 1985, 37 minutes); Professor Antony Hewish - radio telescopes, pulsars and why stars ‘twinkle’ (recorded c. 1985 41 minutes); Sir Nevill Mott - understanding disordered systems (recorded c. 1985, 50 minutes); Sir Alan Hodgkin and Sir Andrew Huxley - discovering how nerves transmit messages around the body.(recorded c. 1985, 51 minutes).
