Royal Shakespeare Company, The

Synopsis
Anthology arts series. In this final edition of The South Bank Show presenter Melvyn Bragg goes behind the scenes at the Royal Shakespeare Company as it embarks on an ambitious programme of work inspired by Russia and the former Soviet Union, examining the
rigorous preparations involved in the run-up to the premiere of Ukrainian author Natal’ia Vorozhbit’s The Grain Store, a play directed by Michael Boyd about the famine in the Ukraine which killed millions of people in the 1930s. Filmed in Stratford and the Ukraine, the programme includes interviews with members of the RSC involved in the season and extracts from the play. There are also brief scenes in the dressing room during the staging of As You Like It, also directed by Michael Boyd. Boyd talks about the importance of new writing for the Company, ensemble work, the stage design of the new RSC theatre, and what he feels the Royal Shakespeare Company should be.
