Racial Stereotypes in the Media

Synopsis
Examines how racial stereotypes are constantly being redefined and reinforced on TV, in the movies, in magazines, on the Web, and in video games . The programme looks at: How racial stereotypes can frame perceptions, reinforce prejudices, and promote fear of the "other"; How the once demeaning and offensive racial stereotypes that were pervasive in popular media are being treated in a more sensitive manner in representations of race today; · How the pernicious effects of that stereotyping live on in the new racism arising from disparities in the treatment of stories involving whites and people of colour in a ratings-driven news market; The relationship between mass media and social constructions of race from political and economic perspectives while looking at the effects media can have on audiences.
