Good Supervision Video, The

Synopsis

A video to help doctoral students in all higher education institutions and all disciplines get the best from their supervisor. The programme covers: understanding the supervisor’s role; planning and making good use of supervision meetings; taking the lead in supervision meetings; understanding differences between disciplines; planning the wider work of PhD research; establishing a realistic timetable for completion on time; dealing with a ‘busy’ supervisor; understanding the UK system if you are from overseas; knowing what supervisors should and should not expect of you; keeping records of supervision meetings; understanding the limits of the supervisor’s role; asking for feedback; understanding upgrading, transfer and monitoring procedures; dealing with setbacks and disappointments.

The programme can also help staff preparing to take on the role of supervisor for the first time and raise issues for discussion with experienced supervisors.

Based on specially scripted drama scenarios and interviews with experienced supervisors. Produced for Birkbeck, University of London, with advice from Professor John Wakeford, Director of the Missenden Centre for the Development of Higher Education.

For a one-off payment, institutions can be licensed to make the video available to all their registered students and staff, either in DVD format or via an intranet or other secure digital platform.
