Eat Less Meat - It’s Costing the Earth

Alternative title
Genetic Engineering and Farm Animals
Synopsis
This video and the accompanying report argue that rising meat consumption: is putting unsustainable pressure on the earth’s resources of land, water and energy; diverts grain needed to feed people to use as animal feed, damaging food security; leads to deforestation as land is cleared for pasture or to grow crops to feed animals; contributes to global warming and ‘acid rain’; encourages intensive farming systems which do not meet the welfare needs of animals; has negative implications for human health.
It argues for decision makers and consumers in the developed world to reduce dependence on animal products. It argues for a more moderate consumption of meat, and for that meat to be produced using humane and sustainable production methods.
Contributors include Jonathon Porritt, Patrick Holden of the Soil Association, and Professor Walter Willett of the Harvard School of Public Health. Narrated by Joanna Lumley.
