Synopsis
A video resource for students studying the short play ‘The Island’ , devised in 1973 by playwright Athol Fugard and the actors John Kani and Winston Ntshona. The video is filmed on Robben Island and focuses on Dr John Kani discussing the play, its setting and relevance to post-apartheid South Africa. The video is in 6 sections: 1) the social and political context of the play; 2) from Roben Island to The Island (the significance of the mime sequence); 3) Textual questions; 4) John Kani reads from Scene 4; 5) Reading from the play by Bridge House College students; 6) The reality of Robben Island - a former prisoner’s tale.
