Terraces and Raised Beds

Alternative title
Aquaculture: Synergy of Land and Water
Synopsis
Shows how Sepp and Veronica Holzer have cultivated 112 acres on a south facing hillside in the Austrian Alps in soil that had become acidic due to the pine forests planted all around. Out of this sterile monoculture they have created a fertile and productive farm - the Kramaterhof. Over the last 40 years they have put back much of the land’s original diversity and now grow cereals, fruit, vegetables and farms fish, by combining ecologically sound permaculture with traditional techniques of terracing and raised beds. This video shows how Sepp transforms the landscape on a new 5 hectare plot by terracing to stop the erosion, planting fruit trees and seeds of 50 different plants. The trees and plants support each other by exchanging nutrients and providing shade and moisture and the terraces act like heat traps.

Another aspect is the creation of raised beds which also contribute to the temperate micro-climate of the hill by protecting the young fruit trees planted between them.
