Charley Says: The Best Public Information Films in the World
- Synopsis
- More than 150 public information films made between the 1950s and 1980s by the Central Office Of Information. They were shown in the breaks between television programmes and warned the public about a range of issues such as the dangers of fridges, road safety, what not to do with a rabid dog and how not to fall into a frozen pond. Divided into 2 sections (available separately on 2 videos).
1) CHARLEY SAYS
Over 70 animated information films featuring classic characters including Charley the safety-conscious ginger moggy, Jo and Petunia the environmentally unfriendly picnicers and, of course, Tufty with the answer to the question ''Why did the squirrel cross the road?''. Also includes two films that were never transmitted about what to do in the event of a nuclear war (ACTION AFTER WARNINGS and CASUALTIES) which formed part of the government’s ‘Protect and Survive’ programme.
2) CHARLEY LIVE
Over seventy of the most memorable live action public information films. These classic mini-dramas and comedies feature stars of the time including Alvin Stardust, Jimmy Hill, Joe Bugner, the entire Walmington-on-Sea platoon, Kevin Keegan, Basil Brush, Jimmy Saville and Rolf Harris, all placed in a 1970s suburb of London in mortal danger from careless drivers, Foot and Mouth disease and exploding chip pans. - Language
