How to Survive the Nine to Five (4 Parts)

Synopsis
1: Looks at stress and personality, including a ‘spot your own stress symptoms’ quiz; demonstrates how similar job stress affects people differently; offers practical advice on how to get more job satisfaction and visits a unique ‘high risk’ stress therapy course for women.
2: Examines work pressure and how it affects people in a range of jobs from top executives to production line workers. Visits the Trebor factory near Colchester where basic but revolutionary changes in the way the job is organised have relieved much of the boredom and frustration associated with unskilled, shop-floor work.
3: A senior secretary describes ‘boss stress’ and how this can lead to physical illness. Looks at a broader range of ‘other people’ as a source of work stress. Investigates efforts being made to help people who have relationship problems at work. These include a stress manager course, police staff training and a visit to the Powys Health Authority.
4: In recent years major sources of stress at work have been increasing pace of change, use of high technology and job insecurity. Looks at the impact of these changes on both men and the increasing workforce of women, 20% of whom earn the same or more than their husbands, which often imposes extra stress on both partners. Assesses the value and attempts by employers to help - a scheme to help women both maintain a career and have a family.
