Synopsis
Series using archaeological and historical source materials to present in a drama-documentary format a thematic exposition of social, economic, cultural and political aspects of Buddhism, focusing on the region of Andhra Desa.
1: An overview of the emergence of Buddhism, including a biographical account of Buddha. Discusses the philosophical underpinnings of Buddhism and its spread in space and time as a popular movement. Reconstructs the socio-economic conditions of the early Buddhism.
2: Looks at the important sites of Buddhism in Andhra Pradesh and discusses their nature and importance.
3: Buddhist art evolved into the Amaravati Schools of Art, with a unique style and distinctive technique. The monuments carved out at various sites and the sculptures and reliefs depicting ‘Jataka’ tales influenced contemporary art not only in India but also in other countries. The granite and limestone carvings found at Armavati and Naganjunakonda had assimilated Greco-Roman influence to evolve a unique style of its own and set the artistic standards for the time.
4: Focuses on the various architectural patterns of Buddhist monuments such as the stupa, chaityas, chaitya grihas, and rock-cut caves. Explains the religious and spiritual significance of Buddhist doctrine.
5: Reconstructs contemporary sciety during the Buddhist era c.300BC to AD300 on the basis of literary, archaeological and inscriptional sources. Analyses the impact of Buddhism on art, culture, architecture, inscriptions, numismatics, ornamentation and dress.
