Good Enough to Eat (2 Parts)

Synopsis
Part 1: Food manufacturers add a vast range of chemical additives for flavour, colour, improved texture and longer shelf life. It is estimated that we each consume at least fifty different additives a day. The programme examines the the long-term effects of toxins to health, interviewing scientists, food technologists, MPs and consumers. Also questions the adequacy of current policing methods.
Part 2: It is estimated that 80% of animals reared for slaughter are injected with hormones to boost growth and increase meat production. There is evidence of a thriving black market in these hormones, with banned drugs still in use. Antibiotics are routinely used in animal feed, both supposedly to promote growth and to prevent the rapid spread of sickness in intensive rearing units. As a result, animals breed super-bacteria which are resistant to antibiotics which are then passed on to humans in the food chain.
