Genetic Code, The: Transcription, Protein Synthesis, Mutations

Synopsis
Covers the three areas of transcription, protein synthesis, and mutations, using mainly computer-generated graphics. After an initial sequence showing the uses of proteins in living cells, the genetic code is explained and reference made to the bases and the activity of polymerase enzymes. Protein synthesis is shown and includes the relationship of anti-codon and codon sequences and the role of RNA in polypeptide formation. Goes on to cover the ‘intron puzzle’, which looks at the functioning of parts of the DNA molecule involved with control. Briggs and King’s classic experiments with amphibian gastrulae are shown and used to explain switch activity in genes. Similarly ‘Lactobacillus’ responding to extra-cellular substrate is covered. In the section on mutations frame shift and point mutations are explained.
