Effects of Neuromuscular Blocking Agents on the Rat Phrenic Nerve Diaphragm
- Synopsis
- Preparation: rat phrenic nerve diaphragm. Gives a detailed historical background to the discovery of muscle relaxant drugs and summarises the results of the early experiments conducted by Claude Bernard. The experimental set up of the phrenic nerve diaphragm preparation is shown. The Biovideograph section demonstrates the differential effects of muscle relaxant addition to nerve mediated responses and the absence of action on direct electrical stimulation of the muscle. Using responses to the addition of K+, nerve induced tetanic responses, post-tetanic stimulation events and the addition of the anticholinesterase neostignine, a classification of muscle relaxant action into non-depolarising/competitive and depolarising types is described.
