Development of Vehicle Safety Barriers, The

Synopsis
Illustrates the Transport and Road Research Laboratory’s programme of research on the design and assessment of vehicle safety barriers for use on Britain’s motorways and major roads. Shows various safety barriers including the tensioned corrugated beam, the open box beam, the hollow section beam, the wire rope safety fence and concrete barriers. Shows the assessment of standard barriers by full-scale impact tests, demonstrating varying degrees of deflection. Also illustrates the five- and 16-tonne capacity safety fences comprising two and four open box beams respectively. Also shows the TRRL’s work on high-containment 30-tonne capacity bridge parapets, together with work on the crash cushion vehicle restraint system, which is designed to stop a 1.5 tonne vehicle travelling at 114 km/hr in 1.5 car lengths.
