Dancing for Their Supper: Foraging Ecology and the Dance Language of the Honey Bee
- Synopsis
- Shows in detail the dance language of honey bees, the language by which they pass on information to other hive members about the location, distance and direction of nectar or pollen-rich flower patches. Teaches the scientific skills necessary to conduct research on the honey bee dance language, showing how to work with an observation hive and how to decode the language. Covers: how the dance forms an integral part of the foraging ecology of honey bees; how it is part of the honey bees’ information transfer system; how to record the dance language and collate the data; how to translate this into foraging locations. Includes a 13-minute shot of the observation hive shows bees performing wag-tail dance. This provides a useful study aid to honey bee dance activity out of season or in bad weather.
