Synopsis
Considers at the increasing potential for toxicity as a side-effect of cytotoxic chemotherapy, as the treatment is intensified or escalated in an effort to improve results. Looks at the basic principles of chemotherapy; the side-effects - nausea and vomiting and at the immune system, infections and the use of haematopoietic growth factors as a possible antidote; adjuncts to chemotherapy - bone marrow transplant and blood stem-cell rescue; issues in assessing the quality of life which a patient can hope for as a consequence of chemotherapy; the importance of sympathetic communication with the patient.
