COSHH and the Biologist
- Synopsis
- Shows how a new biology project is carried out to comply with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1988. This project is concerned with metabolism and active transport in the mammalian gut, and special consideration has to be given to the unusual risks arising from work with nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic. There is also discussion of the need for medical surveillance when working with experimental animals, and of assessing the risks of work with microorganisms (salmonellae and Shigellae), using the categorisation scheme of the Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens.
