Against the Sea: A Case Study in Coast Erosion
- Synopsis
- Barton is a cliff-top resort in Christchurch Bay, Hampshire, England. Property and amenities are threatened by coastal retreat of up to a metre a year. The problem is caused by a combination of marine processes and mass movement related to water seepage. The cost of protection has to be considered in terms of cost benefit analysis, social pressures and political debate. The engineering response involves a combination of measures including piling, revetments, rip-rap, groynes and drains. The wider implications of the work have to be considered in relation to sediment supply and movement within and beyond Christchurch Bay.
