Synopsis
Between 1830 and 1930 Chicago was laid out and became the second largest city in the USA and a centre of world trade. The complexity of its infrastructure grew as the city was developed using innovative technology in communications, sanitation and building. Outstanding are the skyscrapers, which form a dominant element in the city’s stucture. In two parts: 1) Chicago: The Building of an EntrepÙt City: uses interviews with experts and archive footage to illustrate the development of transport and drainage infrastructures in Chicago; 2) Chicago: The Rise of the Skyscraper: looks at a number of Chicago buildings, including the Reliance Building and the Rookery Building, and examines the technological and social factors that led to the rise of the skyscraper.
