Changing China

Synopsis
A series of five programmes examining the stagggering pace and scale of change in the People’s Republic of China - both in the cities and in remote villages. Asks who gains and who may be getting left behind: 1) Farming North and South: Contrasts the agricultural systems, climates and cultures in the remote hills north-west of Bejing and the lush valleys of south-west China; 2) The Three Gorges Dam: the world’s largest hydro-electric project, though its principal purpose is flood control. Discusses benefits and drawbacks; 3) Forestry, Flooding and Farming: environmental damage resulting from deforestation in the Yangtze watershed; 4) Township Enterprises and Migration: how rural industry in Shanghai’s hinterland has prospered under the economic liberalisation which is strangling many of the older urban factories; 5) Urban Development in Shanghai: profiles a young woman who works in an international merchant bank and a construction worker.
