Cat Nictitating Membrane

Synopsis
A computer simulated of experiments that may be performed on the superior cervical ganglion-nictitating membrane preparation of the cat ‘in vivo’ to teach the pharmacology of ganglionic transmission and sympathetically innervated smooth muscle. Introductory information covers the pharmacology of the ganglion and the neuromuscular junction. Students may experimentally apply various drugs by arterial injection either to the ganglion or the nictitating membrane, and pre-ganglionic nerves may be stimulated using parameters that evoke a half-maximal contraction to observe effects of drugs that will relax the membrane.
