Ynysygwas Bridge Beam Tests
- Synopsis
- As part of the Transport and Road Research Laboratory’s work enabling highway authorities to ensure that post-tensioned concrete bridges remain servicexs, load tests were carried out using a specially constructed outdoor rig, on the partially corroded concrete edge beams recovered from the Ynysygwas road bridge over the River Afan. The bridge deck collapsed suddenly in 1985 after 30 years in service, leaving only the edge beams standing and was caused by corrosion of the steel tendons. Shows the test procedures in detail.
