Why Use Statistics? (4 Parts)

Synopsis
Series showing the relevance of statistics to science subjects and teaching the basic statistical methods required. Real-life situations illustrate the relevance of statistics to a variety of disciplines, with animated graphics used to illustrate the theoretical principles and clarify the processes involved. Exercise pauses are provided at regular intervals. The underlying theme of these modules is that variability is a fact of scientific life and that statistics helps to handle this variability and to draw suitable inferences from it.
1 (1994): Uses blood pressure measurement to illustrate systematic and random errors; bias and random variation.
2 (1994): Covers qualitative and quantitative data; dot plots; bar charts and histograms; summary measures and characteristic values (mode, median and mean); the ‘spread’ of a distribution (quartiles, inter-quartile range and standard deviation); introduction to normal distribution.
3 (1994): Explains why samples are so important in estimating data relating to entire populations. Covers: random samples; the ‘standard error of the mean’; the ‘95% confidence interval’.
4 (1995): Covers scatter diagrams; line of best fit; correlation coefficient; curve of best fit.
