Uncanny Conceptions

Synopsis
From Hegel to Heidegger, Freud to Wittgenstein, the uncanny has figured as a key philosophical concept and is now evolving into a cultural concept with implications not only for philosophy and psychoanalysis but for all cultural practitioners. Rebecca Comay, phenomenologist and philosophy lecturer, advances a politics of the uncanny via ancient Greek statuary. Elizabeth Wright explores the ‘real uncanny in performance’ and Frank Cioffi draws on Wittgenstein to challenge Freud’s celebrated essay on the unhomely.
