Introduces the concept of the total station and illustrates some of its applications in the field. Traces its history and evolution and then looks in detail at the hardware. In five parts: 1) introduction; 2) evolution of total stations; 3) total station hardware - power supply control panel, reflectors; 4) statndard measurement and recording features - angle measurement facilities, tilt compensation, distrance measurement facilities, data recording; 5) on-board software, three-dimensional coordinate measurements, traverse style measurements, resection, remote elevation measurement, missing line measurement, setting out faciities - setting out by angle and distance and setting out by coordinates.
