To Make a Map

Synopsis
Illustrates the various steps in making a multi-coloured topographic map of a remote area in northern Canada. Shows how aerial photographs are taken, describes the problems of relief and tilt displacement and outlines how these are overcome in mapping from stereoscopic pairs of aerial photographs during photogrammetric mapping. Shows the work of the photogrammetrist and how the photogrammetric base map is transformed into a master manuscript and associated overlays. Describes how test sheets are made, how quality checks for accuracy, registration and colour are made and how the full colour topographic map is printed.
