Talking on the Bus: Language Development in Children

Synopsis
In the 1960s speech and language therapist Catherine Renfrew developed a technique for assessing children experiencing language difficulties. Using a sequence of pictures telling the story of a runaway bus, the technique became known as the ‘bus story’. Here the bus story is used with eight children aged between 3 and 10 whose teachers believe they have average spoken language for their age. As each child relates the story a split screen is used to follow the picture cues that the child is seeing, and viewers can make their own assessments.
