Sustainable Design
- Synopsis
- Uses three case studies to illustrate elements of sustainability in design: 1) the smart car - initially a joint venture between Mercedes and Swatch, the car is designed for maximum economy of space and performance and body panels can be replaced and recycled. The Smartyville powerplant in Germany has its own powerplant and recycles the body warmth given off by the workers, thus saving 50% on energy costs; 2) the Remarkable pencil - each one made from a recycled plastic cup; 3) Freeplay Power - initially intended to power radios in the developing world, Freeplay developed a wind-up mechanism now used instead of batteries in torches and is experimenting with wind-up laptop computers and mobile phones.
