Surgery for Chronic Otitis Externa and Otitis Media
- Synopsis
- Chronic hyperplastic otitis externa, in which there is a loss of canal lumen, is treated preferentially by total ablation of the external auditory canal down to the level of the tympanic membrane. This includes the removal of the external acoustic process of the petrous temporal bone and its diseased integumental lining. Otitis media is a difficult condition to treat but bulla osteomy or ablation by a lateral approach can give excellent results. Both techniques are demonstrated and discussed.
